Cookie Policy
Last Updated: November 6, 2025
Simple Summary: We don't use traditional cookies. We only use localStorage (browser-side storage) to save your habits and remember your consent. Nothing is tracked or sent to servers.
1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently and provide information to website owners.
2. How We Use Cookies and Storage
The Daily Habit Journal does NOT use traditional cookies for tracking, analytics, or advertising. Instead, we use browser localStorage for essential functionality.
2.1 localStorage vs. Cookies
localStorage is a browser technology that stores data locally on your device. Unlike cookies:
- Data never gets sent to servers
- It has no expiration date (persists until manually cleared)
- It's not included in HTTP requests
- It can only be accessed by JavaScript on your device

4. Categories of Storage
4.1 Strictly Necessary Storage
This storage is essential for the app to function. Without it, the Daily Habit Journal cannot save your habits or track your progress.
- habits: Required to remember what habits you've created
- completions: Required to track your daily progress
4.2 Preference Storage
- cookieConsent: Remembers your consent preference so we don't show the notice again
4.3 What We DON'T Use
We do NOT use:
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics, etc.)
- Advertising cookies
- Third-party tracking cookies
- Social media cookies
- Session cookies
- Targeting/profiling cookies
5. How to Manage Storage
5.1 Clearing localStorage
You can clear all stored data at any time:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data → Cookies and other site data
- Firefox: Options → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data → Remove All
- Edge: Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cookies and other site data
5.2 Impact of Clearing Storage
Warning: Clearing localStorage will delete all your habits and progress data permanently. There is no way to recover this data.
6. Third-Party Services
We do not use any third-party services that would place cookies or tracking technologies on your device.
7. Your Rights
Under GDPR and other privacy laws, you have the right to:
- Know what data is stored (view in browser developer tools)
- Delete your data (clear localStorage)
- Object to data processing (don't use the service)
- Data portability (manually export your habits)
8. Do Not Track (DNT)
Since we don't track users at all, Do Not Track browser settings don't apply. Your activity is never tracked regardless of your DNT setting.
